My brother insisted a custom map was a boring anniversary gift
He said it was impersonal, but I had one made of the street where we had our first date. She cried when she opened it. Anyone have a gift that people doubted but turned out perfect?

Reminds me of the year my dad gave my mom a repaired toaster. She still talks about it more than any fancy thing he ever bought.

Honestly sounds like your brother just doesn't get it. People cry over stuff that means something to them, not over a fancy price tag. Was he expecting you to buy jewelry or something more flashy? The map clearly hit the right note for your wife, so who cares what he thinks. What did he get his partner that was so much better?

Yeah, I saw a whole thing about this. Some people just see gifts as a show, like a public thing to prove something. But the best gift is the one that shows you really know the person. If a map made her cry, that means you listened and remembered something important. Your brother's opinion on it is just noise. The only review that matters is your wife's reaction.
