Vent: My neighbor just called all the rocks in my garden 'plain old gravel'

I was showing off my new rock garden, which has some really cool banded chert and a piece of petrified wood I got from a trip to the Arizona desert. He looked at it for a second and said, 'Looks like the stuff they put in driveways.' It just made me realize how much you have to know to really see what's special (like the tiny quartz veins in the chert). Has anyone else had someone totally miss the beauty in a rock you were proud of?

Ugh that's so frustrating lol. It's like they only see the surface and miss all the cool history right there.

Ever try just pointing out one small weird detail to get them curious? I started doing that, like mentioning the hidden symbols on an old building's cornerstone. Once they notice one thing, they start seeing the rest.

I used to just give up when people didn't see the history around them. Then I read about the old shoe factory downtown that had a secret tunnel for workers. I started telling people that one fact, and now they ask me what else they've missed. It really does open a door for them to start looking closer at everything.
