Spent 10 years using a rock hammer wrong until a field trip to the Grand Canyon
I was out in Arizona last spring with a group from the local club. This old geologist watched me chip at a sandstone outcrop and just laughed. Turns out I was hitting the rock straight on instead of at an angle. He showed me how to strike the edge and split it clean in half on the first try. Has anyone else had a basic tool habit get corrected by someone who knew better?

Is it just me or does this kind of thing happen way more often than we like to admit? I've been thinking about this a lot lately, how we can do something for years the hard way just because nobody ever showed us the easy way. Like last week my neighbor saw me struggling to get a lid off a jar and she just tapped it on the counter once and it popped right open. It's funny how we get stuck in our ways and assume our method is the only method, especially with tools or everyday stuff. Makes me wonder what other basic things I'm doing wrong that someone could fix in five seconds if they saw me.
