Remembering the 2004 Parkfield earthquake drill and how it changed our field protocols.

We were doing a routine survey near the San Andreas fault when the simulation hit, and it showed us our old radio check-in system was way too slow. Has your team updated its emergency plans since then?

Didn't that drill actually prove the old system was reliable?

The Parkfield drill data showed our check-ins took over 90 seconds, which was too long for a real rupture. We switched to satellite messengers that ping our location every 30 seconds now.

Honestly, I thought our old system was fine too until that drill showed how slow it really was.
