I was sure the 'petrified wood' at the local rock shop was just dyed concrete
Took a piece to the university geology department, and a grad student showed me the preserved cell structure under a microscope. Anyone else have a find they were totally wrong about?

That "preserved cell structure" part is so cool. I did the same thing with a weird lump I found in a creek, convinced it was slag glass. Turns out it was a decent piece of obsidian with conchoidal fractures I just couldn't see until it was cleaned up.

Right?! The cleanup reveal is the best part. I've pulled stuff out of a creek that looked like a busted car window until I hit it with a wire brush and saw the conchoidal fracture patterns. Plus obsidian has that almost greasy feel when it's wet, slag always feels a little more dull and rough to me.
