Hot take: a park ranger in Moab showed me how to spot a real fossil from a weird rock
We were looking at some layered sandstone and she pointed at a small, dark shape. She said, 'If it looks too perfect, it's probably just a concretion. Real bone has texture you can feel.' Has anyone else had a guide point out something that obvious you were missing?

That texture trick is so simple I can't believe I never heard it before.

Oh wow, that totally reminds me of a birding walk I went on! The leader said, 'Stop looking for the whole bird, look for the movement.' I was staring at a blur of leaves forever, and then I saw one twitch. It was a little woodpecker the whole time. Guides just have that magic eye for the small details we totally overlook.
