Realized I was cleaning my phone speakers wrong the whole time

So I spent like 6 months complaining my phone speakers sounded muffled and distorted. I was using a dry toothbrush and compressed air to clean the grills out every few weeks. Then my buddy at work said I should try a tiny drop of 91% isopropyl alcohol on a soft brush instead. First try and the sound came back crystal clear like day one. Has anyone else had that moment where you found out you were doing a basic gadget cleaning step all wrong?

Wait is it really that simple? I always thought alcohol would mess up the phone's water resistant coating or something so I never tried it. I used to clean mine with a dry brush and it sounded okay but never great. I was totally wrong about that, your friend's tip makes way more sense. The alcohol evaporates fast so it won't get inside the phone. I'm definitely trying this on my phone tonight, I bet I'll hear a difference right away.

Well, I've got to say, that's a fair concern and I don't blame you for being cautious. But here's the thing I've been wondering for a while now: how do you know for sure the alcohol won't damage the coating over time? I mean, evaporating fast is one thing, but what about all the tiny particles that might stick around after it dries? I've seen some tech repair guys on YouTube say a 70% isopropyl mix is safest, but even that can eat away at certain adhesives if you're not careful. Have you checked what your phone manufacturer officially recommends for cleaning the speaker grills?

My Galaxy S10 actually had muffled sound for months until I hit it with a 70% isopropyl wipe on a microfiber cloth two weeks ago. I folded the cloth into a thin strip and gently worked it across the speaker grille openings, just a light dab not soaking it. Let it sit for 30 seconds after each pass and then tested the sound. The difference was night and day, especially with phone calls where people sounded like they were underwater before. I checked Samsung's support site first and they actually recommend dry cleaning first but say 70% is fine if you don't oversaturate. Just stay away from the charging port and mic holes and you're golden.
