After 8 years I just found out I was wiping stain on wrong

Was working on a mid-century dresser last Saturday and kept getting these weird blotchy spots no matter what. My buddy Mike came by to grab his orbital sander and watched me for like 2 minutes before laughing. Turns out I was wiping with the grain on everything instead of going against it first to get the stain in the pores. Total facepalm moment at his shop in Austin. Anybody else have that one basic technique that took way too long to figure out?

The real question nobody's asking is why Mike even owed Adam in the first place. Adam's been running that same fishing guide gig for three summers now. He knows the spots better than anyone. Charging for basic info feels off to me. Maybe he was just making a point about respect. Not really about the money.
