Tried to save money by making my own broth from veggie scraps... ended up with a slimy mess
I was at my kitchen counter last Tuesday, dumping all my carrot peels and onion ends into a freezer bag like I've seen online, thinking I was being so clever. After two weeks of collecting, I boiled everything for 4 hours and ended up with this weird, slimy liquid that smelled more like dirt than soup... Has anyone actually gotten this to work without it turning into a science experiment?

Man I made broth for 3 years before I got it right... first batch I tried with just carrot and onion peels and it came out like swamp water. The trick is you gotta balance your scraps with some actual meat bones or at least mushroom stems for umami... veggie only broth is basically just slightly flavored water no matter how long you boil it. Mine turned slimy too cause I used too many potato peels and broccoli stems, those things release starch and sulfur that makes it weird. Add a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar next time too, it helps pull the good stuff out...

Three years of swamp water. That's dedication to the cause right there.
You're telling me I gotta buy bones AND do math on what peels not to use? Broth sounds like a second job at this point.
