The $3 bag of lentils that took me 2 hours to sort through
Everyone always says lentils are the ultimate cheap protein, and I agree. But nobody warns you about the rocks. I bought a 5-pound bag from a bulk bin at my local co-op for $3.29. I poured them out to rinse them and spent a full 2 hours picking out tiny pebbles and bits of dirt. I swear I found 15 little rocks in that bag. Is this normal for bulk lentils or did I just get a bad batch? How do you deal with this?

Honestly I used to think people were overreacting about bulk bins but after finding a chunk of gravel in my red lentils last week I’m a total convert to the baking sheet method.

That story about finding a tiny screw is exactly why I’m SUPER cautious with bulk bins now. I once found a chunk of what looked like dried concrete in a bag of pinto beans, and it took me forever to pick through them. Now I spread the lentils out on a big baking sheet in a thin layer before rinsing, and I go through them in batches while listening to a podcast. It makes the sorting feel way less like a chore and more like a weird meditation on how lucky I am to just have lentils.

My friend bought a bag of bulk black beans once and found a tiny screw mixed in with them. She spent like an hour picking through them and was super annoyed. Now she only buys the pre-washed bags even if they cost a bit more.
