Just realized how much cheaper a real chicken is compared to the pre-cut stuff

I was looking at a receipt from 2008 I found in an old cookbook. A whole chicken was $4.50 back then, and the same store now sells a pack of just chicken breasts for $12. I learned from a local butcher that you get about three meals from one bird if you use the bones for stock. Has anyone else gone back to buying whole birds to save cash?

My cat loves the leftover giblets.

You can stretch it even further if you carve it well, getting four servings from a good-sized bird. That stock is basically free food, right? Just make sure your cat, like @kareng27's, doesn't steal the good bits first.

Yeah, carving is definitely a skill I haven't mastered yet. I usually end up with something that looks like it went through a wood chipper. My dog gets way too hopeful when I'm trying to get those four servings. At least @kareng27's cat has refined taste with the giblets, mine just stares at the carcass like it personally offended him. I always make the stock though, it feels like a small victory after the carving mess.
