I used to think dried beans were a waste of time until my power got cut for two days

My fridge died, so I had to cook a bag of pinto beans I'd bought for 79 cents. Just boiled them with some onion and a ham hock from the freezer. They were so much better than canned, and the whole pot cost maybe $3. I've been making a big batch every Sunday now. Anyone have good ideas for using the leftover bean water?

Wait, a ham hock from the freezer? How long was that thing in there? I'm always scared to eat mystery meat from my freezer after a few months. Your beans do sound amazing though. I've heard you can use the leftover bean water, the pot liquor, to thicken up soups or stews instead of broth.

But is bean water really that big of a deal? It just sounds like dirty broth to me.

Man I used to think the same way until I tried making stock from leftover ham bones and veggie scraps. That bean water is surprisingly good if you season it right, I'll add a splash of vinegar and some herbs to brighten it up. Your mileage may vary but it beats plain water every time in my book.
