I finally stopped buying pre-shredded cheese after doing the math

Used to grab those bags of shredded cheddar without thinking, like $4 for 8 ounces. Then last month I noticed a block of the same cheese was $3 for 16 ounces. Now I just shred it myself while watching TV, takes maybe 3 minutes and saves me $5 a week. Anyone else find other "convenience" foods that are secretly ripping you off?

right there with you man, it's wild how much they charge for shredded cheese when the block version is half the price for double the stuff. i started doing the same with bagged salad mixes, way cheaper to just buy a head of lettuce and chop it up myself. feels good knowing you're not getting ripped off just for a little convenience.

Gotta disagree with you and @terryallen here, the pre-shredded stuff saves me from having to wash a grater and my hands get all cramped up from shredding. Sometimes paying a little extra is worth not dealing with the mess, especially if you're like me and you hate doing dishes.

The bagged salad got me too man. I was spending like $5 for a bag of "Italian blend" that would go bad in 3 days. Now I grab a head of romaine for a buck and a half, a green pepper for 80 cents, and it lasts me all week. Same with those pre-cut fruit trays, they charge you $8 for a handful of melon that's already getting mushy. I started buying whole pineapples and just hacking them up while I watch the game, saves a ton. Pre-cooked bacon is another one, $6 for a few limp strips when you can cook a whole pack for the same price.
