I think 2-inch risers on every single gate is a waste. Here's why.
I was at a safety meeting down at the Omaha plant a few months back and a guy showed me a gate that had been catching slag for years with just a 1-inch riser - no cracks, no failures. Has anyone else found the 2-inch rule is more about covering liability than actual function?

...my buddy down in Council Bluffs had a similar thing. He runs a small fab shop and he's been using 1.5 inch risers on all his gates for the last six years. He swears he's never had a single call back for cracking or slag damage, and he does a lot of work for the meatpacking plants around there. He told me the engineering rep from the steel supplier even said most of the 2 inch spec is just about covering their own asses.

Six years in meatpacking plants, really? That environment eats everything eventually, I'd want to see those gates myself before I'd trust a buddy's story.
