Bought a $350 infrared thermometer for the furnace, now I can't believe I ever worked without it.

My old HVAC guy swore by his Fluke model for checking duct temps. Honestly, it saves so much time diagnosing airflow issues compared to just guessing. Tbh it's one of those tools that pays for itself after a single tricky service call.

But have you ever tried just using your hand to feel for big temperature changes? I learned from an old timer that your skin can pick up a lot if you know what to look for. Sure, a fancy meter gives you a number, but sometimes that extra step slows you down when a quick check tells you the same story. I get why people like the tool, but I don't think it's always needed for every job.

Old timers didn't have to deal with modern insulation issues.
