A retired molder from the old Pittsburgh plant told me they used to judge a core's readiness by the smell of the baking sand, not a timer.

He said, 'Your nose knows when the binders are set,' and now I'm wondering what other old-school senses we've lost by relying only on digital readouts.

That line about "your nose knows" is so cool. We traded that kind of deep, earned intuition for the convenience of a screen telling us a number. I bet a lot of bakers, mechanics, and farmers had the same kind of built-in gauges we just don't develop anymore.

Yeah, that "built-in gauge" thing is everywhere now. My grandpa could tell the weather by his knee, and I need an app for it.
