Found a VHS tape of a show called 'The Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers' in a Portland thrift store.

The tape was moldy and the player ate it halfway through the episode. I had to stop, clean the heads with a q-tip and rubbing alcohol, and carefully rewind the tape by hand. Got to see the whole weird space western pilot from 1986. Anyone else remember this one or have a show that almost got lost to bad tape?

Oh man, that's a deep cut. I read a blog post once about how that show was one of the first to blend CGI with traditional animation. Tbh, the whole salvage operation you did with the moldy tape is a whole mood. I had a copy of the '90s "Swamp Thing" cartoon that shed its oxide all over my VCR.

Actually had some luck with a baking soda paste on the plastic parts of a moldy VHS shell once. Left it to dry in the sun for a day, then used a soft toothbrush to get the gunk off. The tape itself was a lost cause, but at least the case looked presentable on the shelf.

Wait, but that old CGI looks so bad now! I'd take a scratched tape over those clunky graphics any day.
