Back in '98 I had to choose between taping 'The Pretender' or 'Viper' on my VCR and I picked the one with the shape-shifting genius.

I went with 'The Pretender' and missed the car chase show, but watching Jarod solve a new case each week from a locked-down facility was worth it, even if I had to explain the whole plot to my confused dad the next morning.

You made the wrong call back then. "Viper" was the real deal with those custom car chases and weekly stunts. "The Pretender" was just the same old puzzle solving in a fake office every episode. The car show had way more action and you could just watch it without needing a full explanation. Your dad would have actually enjoyed the cool cars instead of being confused by some guy pretending to be a doctor.

Wow, you two are really going at it over some old TV shows! I gotta say though, I remember watching both and "Viper" was honestly more fun to just sit back and enjoy. The car chases were ridiculous but in the best way, like when they'd slide under a semi truck or that one where the Dodge just jumped over a drawbridge. My dad was the same way, he'd zone out on the puzzles but perk right up when the muscle cars revved up. That show knew its audience.

Oh please, like your dad could even follow the plot of a car chase! At least "The Pretender" had a story that made you think, instead of just another exploding engine block. Guess we know who needed the simple show.
