Warning: I was scoring underlayment wrong for a decade until a client in Tacoma pointed out my cuts were lifting.

Honestly, I was using my utility knife to score and snap, but the tip-off was seeing the pad tear instead of cleanly separating, so I switched to a hook blade and a straightedge for a perfect cut every time, anyone else have a better method for that dense rubber stuff?

You ever try a sharp blade on a cordless oscillating tool? I switched to that for the really thick, dense underlayment and it's like cutting butter. The key is to go slow and let the tool do the work, otherwise you can melt the rubber. A straightedge still helps for keeping the line perfect, but it's way faster and cleaner than scoring for me.

Wait, so the hook blade was the real game-changer for you?

It's funny how the smallest tweaks make the biggest difference sometimes, @michael_bennett11. You see it everywhere, from tools to recipes!
