Had to choose between a full tear-out or floating a new floor over old tile on a kitchen job

The client wanted vinyl plank over their old 80s tile, and I was worried about height issues at the doors if I just floated over it. I went with the tear-out, which added two days and about $400 to the quote, but the final look is rock solid. Anyone ever float over tile and regret it later?

My last float job in a Phoenix condo needed a full inch of transition strips, it looked terrible.

That hollow sound grantt11 mentioned is the worst. My buddy tried floating vinyl over his bathroom tile to save cash. Within a year, the planks started clicking and shifting near the toilet where he stood every day. He ended up with a weird bounce in the middle of the floor. It made simong79's transition strip problem look minor. He said it was the most annoying home fix he ever lived with.

Totally agree about the final look being rock solid. I did a float over tile once to save time and it was a constant headache. Every time someone walked in the kitchen it just FELT wrong, like a hollow sound underfoot. You made the right call taking the extra time. That height difference at the doors and appliances becomes a real problem down the road. Never cutting that corner again.
