Overheard a guy at the Springfield swap meet say 'if it's under $20, just buy it, you can't lose'. I think that's terrible advice.

My uncle's garage is a museum of bad swap meet buys. Ask yourself where it goes before you hand over the cash.

That "can't lose" idea is exactly how my garage got full of broken power tools and weird kitchen gadgets. You absolutely can lose, it's just twenty bucks at a time. I bought a "vintage" radio for fifteen dollars that was just a hollow shell filled with dead spiders. The loss isn't just the money, it's the space and the hassle of getting rid of the junk later.
