Was dead set against re-caulking my own tub, but my buddy did his in 45 minutes with a $6 tool

I watched him use a simple caulk smoothing tool from Home Depot and it came out looking factory clean, no more of that wavy finger mess I used to make. Has anyone else tried those little silicone finishing tools or am I just late to the party?

That peeling story sounds like he didn't prep the surface right. Those slick tools are only as good as the base you're working on. If you don't clean off all the old soap scum and dry it bone dry, nothing sticks right. I've got a little kit I use for my own bathroom and it's held up for three years now without any lifting. The trick is also to fill the gap completely instead of just skating a thin layer over the top. Most people try to use too little caulk and then wonder why it shrinks and pops off after a few weeks.

My buddy tried that tool and his caulk peeled off within 3 weeks.
