Question about old house wiring I found in a 1970s home repair book
I mean, I was flipping through my grandpa's copy of 'The Complete Home Handyman' from 1974 and it said you could still buy asbestos tape for electrical work back then. Has anyone else come across something like that in an old place?

Honestly, that stuff was in the book because it worked. People act like it was pure poison, but it was just a good insulator. They used it for decades without everyone dropping dead. Modern replacements probably have their own hidden problems we won't know about for fifty years. The fear around it now is way overblown compared to the actual risk in a sealed electrical box.

Wow, I never really looked at it that way. I always just accepted the warnings as total fact. But you're right, if it's sealed inside a box and left alone, the actual danger seems pretty low. Makes me wonder what we're using now that future folks will panic about.
