Honestly, I had to pick between patching a hole with spackle or using joint compound and my drywall looks way better now

Yeah, spackle's for small stuff, but compound's the real fix for a smooth finish.

Read a blog post from a contractor the other day who said the same thing. He explained how spackle can crack over time if you use it on anything bigger than a nail hole. Compound's way more forgiving and sands down easier for large patches. Plus it dries slower so you got more time to work it smooth. Made me realize I was just being impatient grabbing the spackle off the shelf. Learning that lesson for sure.
