Finagling a stuck drawer slide on a 1980s dresser this morning felt like winning the lottery
The thing was rusted shut near the back track, took a shot of WD-40 and a rubber mallet to coax it free. Anyone else have a go-to trick for stubborn metal drawer slides?

Oh man, I had the exact same thing happen last year with a 1980s Lane dresser I was fixing up for my daughter's room. The bottom drawer slide on the left side was completely seized up, I thought I was going to have to rip the whole thing out. I used a mix of PB Blaster and a heat gun on the stubborn spots, let it soak for like 15 minutes, and then tapped it with a brass punch and hammer. It finally broke free with a loud screech that scared the cat. That rubber mallet trick is a lifesaver, honestly got more use out of that thing than I ever expected.

Something a lot of folks don't mention is checking if that slide is actually the right one for the dresser. I've seen a few old Lane pieces where someone swapped out a drawer slide from a different brand or era, and the metal tabs don't line up right. The seized part might just be binding because the whole slide is bent to fit a spot it wasn't made for. Before you go crazy with the heat gun, try loosening the screws a turn or two on that slide. Sometimes a tiny misalignment from a previous repair job gets overlooked and it's not even rust causing the problem, just a bad fit.
