My bright idea to ditch the auger led to a silly scene
I think hand-digging post holes builds character. On a recent job, I convinced my crew to try it on a small section. We were halfway done when a neighborhood boy came by with a toy shovel and offered to help. He actually outdug two of my guys, and we had to buy him ice cream. Ever have a kid show you up on your own job?

It's wild how often kids cut through the overthinking with pure focus. That toy shovel probably felt like a real tool to him, no stress about pace or technique. You see it everywhere, someone without the assumed limits just diving in. Makes those unplanned moments of getting shown up feel like a gift, not a defeat.

That kid earned his ice cream for sure. I'd probably be the third guy he outworked.

Why do we make simple things so hard? I mean, michaelmurphy, you're totally right about that kid outworking everyone. He just saw a job and went for it, no extra thoughts in the way. We get stuck planning or worrying how we look, and a kid with a toy shovel just gets it done. It's that pure focus, like nothing else exists but the task. Makes you want to just start digging without overthinking it.
