Had to choose between wood or metal posts for a 200ft run in Raleigh last month
I picked wood (cedar, specifically) because the homeowner wanted that look and it was cheaper by about $400. But now 5 weeks in I'm already seeing some ground contact rot on a couple posts near a low spot. The metal ones would have held up better in that damp soil no doubt. Anyone else dealt with this trade-off and regretted going with wood?

Huh, five weeks in is rough. I'd be more worried about what's happening underground than above ground with cedar that fast. Might be worth checking if the ground soil pH is just eating the wood alive.

Oh jeez, soil pH eating wood sounds like something out of a nightmare. I've had enough trouble just keeping my fence from rotting out from simple rain, now I gotta worry about the dirt itself taking a bite out of it? Fivе weeks is brutal though, I'd be tempted to just yank it up and try a different spot.
