Cast iron post caps changed my mind after 5 years of vinyl
I always thought vinyl fence caps were the way to go since they never rust, but after reading a job report from a builder in Seattle who said his cast iron caps lasted 30 years without a single crack in the rain, I started looking into them. Found out the weight actually helps keep posts straight in soft ground, which I never even considered before. Anybody else switched materials for something as small as a cap and seen better results?

I mean yeah, the weight thing caught me off guard too. Last year I swapped some aluminum caps for heavier ones just hoping they'd stop rattling in the wind, and the next thing I know my gate posts stopped shifting in the mud.

Heck yeah, that weight thing is no joke. I've seen the same thing with heavier caps just keeping everything planted better after wet seasons, especially around gates where posts take the most abuse. It's wild how swapping one little piece can save you from having to reset a whole post later.
