Update: My silk blend nightmare showed why pre-wash is key

I just finished a dress with a nice silk blend. After washing, it shrank a LOT and was ruined. Some fabric blends need special care that we often MISS. Always PRE-WASH your material when you start sewing. This step can prevent BIG problems later. I learned this the hard way, so you don't have to. Please double-check care labels on all your projects.

Really? I never pre-wash delicate silks myself.

Did you have a bad experience with colors running? I actually do a quick cold soak with my silks in a mesh bag, and it's worked out fine for me.

Silk can bleed even in cold water, so a quick soak might not be enough. I learned that the hard way when a scarf turned my whole wash pink! It's safer to do a full, gentle wash with a color catcher sheet.
