TIL how much fabric waste the fast fashion industry creates
I was reading a report from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation last night, and it said the industry produces over 92 million tons of textile waste a year. That's like a garbage truck full of clothes getting dumped every second. It really made me rethink my whole design process, you know, like how much scrap I'm just tossing. Has anyone else tried to seriously cut down their pattern waste?

Yeah that stat is wild. I started laying out my patterns like a jigsaw puzzle and it cut my scrap bin by half, easy.

Does anyone else start feeling like a fabric miser counting every last inch? I spent an hour the other day trying to squeeze a sleeve pattern into a gap between my bodice pieces, and ended up with a chunk barely big enough for a pocket. My husband walked in and asked if I was playing fabric Tetris.

Puzzle piece layouts only go so far though. The real waste happens before the pattern is even cut, when brands order way too much fabric to begin with. We need to fix the overproduction problem at the source, not just clean up the scraps.
