Threw $85 down the drain on that 'professional' pattern drafting kit

Bought one of those fancy pattern drafting sets with the curved rulers and a French curve, thought it would make my life easier. After three tries, the measurements were so off I just went back to my old cardboard templates. Has anyone else found a decent alternative that actually works?

Those curved rulers are a total marketing gimmick if you ask me. I've got a beat-up shoebox lid I've been using for templates for years and it works fine. Not everything needs to be fancy.

Three years ago I actually bought one of those curved rulers (on sale, thank goodness) and it's been sitting in my drawer ever since, still in the plastic wrapper. My go-to template is still a flattened cereal box that has a mysterious coffee stain shaped like Ohio. Pretty sure the ruler companies are just preying on people like me who think buying a tool will magically make us better at whatever we're trying to do.

Channeling @ericb66's shoebox energy, my "professional" kit now just holds my takeout menus.
