My mom told me to use interfacing on a summer dress... I should have listened

So last week I decided to sew a light cotton sundress without any interfacing because I thought it would make it feel too stiff... big mistake. The collar and button placket just sagged and looked all wobbly after one wear. My mom warned me about this exact thing, she said "you'll regret skipping the interfacing" and she was completely right. Has anyone else ignored a sewing tip from an older relative and paid for it?

Oh man yes, starch is actually a lifesaver for lightweight stuff! I did the same thing with a linen blouse, thought I was being clever skipping the interfacing and the whole front placket ended up looking like a wrinkled napkin after an hour of wear. My grandma always said "a little stiffener never hurt nobody" and now I swear by a good spray starch on the collar and button bands for summer fabrics. It gives you that nice crisp edge without the bulk, and you can wash it right out if you change your mind later. Just don't use too much or it gets crunchy, learned that one the hard way too.

Yeah "a little stiffener never hurt nobody" is exactly the kind of thing that sounds like old fashioned talk until you try it yourself... It's funny how that pattern shows up everywhere not just sewing. Like my dad always said "measure twice cut once" and I'd roll my eyes until I ruined a whole sheet of plywood on a bookshelf project. There's something about actually messing up that makes those old sayings click in your head forever.

Next time try starch as a lightweight alternative to interfacing for summer fabrics.
