Blew $80 on a velvet pattern that looked like trash

I bought this expensive velvet fabric from a small shop online. Paid $80 for 3 yards thinking it would make a killer evening dress. The dye rubbed off on my hands and the nap direction was all wrong. No way to fix it after cutting. Guess I learned to always buy a sample first. Anyone here had bad luck with velvet?

Never cutting velvet on a fold is something nobody tells you. The nap gets weird and one side always looks washed out compared to the other. I ruined a whole skirt that way once, had to turn it into a weird asymmetrical thing that still bugs me. Also the dye thing is real, some of those small shops don't treat the fabric right before shipping. Maybe try steam setting the color next time before you cut into it, like with indigo denim.

Oh man, that's rough. I feel for you, that's a lot of money to lose on fabric that just doesn't work. I've been burned by a couple of expensive online fabric purchases myself, and it's such a disappointment when you've got your hopes up for a project.
