Stumbled on a simple trick to square up a trailer shoe in 10 seconds flat

I was fighting with a shoe that kept rocking on the anvil last Tuesday. Finally tried setting the hoof stand at a 45 degree angle to work the toe instead of fighting straight on. It squared up perfect on the first try after that. Has anyone else got a weird angle trick they swear by for shaping?

Yeah exactly tilting the stand makes a world of difference. I read somewhere once that a lot of the rocking comes from the shoe not having a solid flat contact point and changing your angle just helps that seat better. Angela_allen53 I get your point about hoof balance being the deeper issue but sometimes you just need a quick fix for the day. If the foot is decent to start with a simple tilt can save you a headache and ten minutes of cussing.

Yeah that's actually solid advice. Most people overthink squaring when it's usually just the angle of attack. I've been tilting the hoof stand slightly toward me lately and it stops the shoe from twisting.

My mare threw a shoe last week and I blame it on the angle I was working at honestly. But tilting the stand sounds like a quick fix for something that's probably not a huge problem in the first place. I've seen folks get real twisted up about squaring when a horse just needs a better balanced foot to start with. Are we sure a stand tilt is fixing the real issue or just masking a misaligned hoof?
