PSA: A quarter crack repair took me three hours yesterday
It was on a big warmblood with a deep crack running up the hoof wall. Thought it would be a quick patch job, maybe an hour tops. Ended up having to cut back way more than I planned to get to solid horn. Used a lot of acrylic and a fiberglass patch. The horse stood fine, but the prep was a beast. Anyone else find quarter cracks taking way longer than you quote the client?

Why not just cut it out and shoe over?

Man, I feel that. What finally saved me on a nasty one last month was using a dremel with a small sanding drum to really clean out the crack before packing it. I got in there and took out all the dark, soft stuff I couldn't reach with a hoof knife. Then I used a two-part epoxy putty as a base layer because it sticks to damp horn better than acrylic sometimes. After that set, I built up the acrylic over it. That extra step with the dremel made all the difference for getting a solid fill.
