My mentor told me to always use a rasp before the final nail set, even on easy trims

I thought it was extra work for no reason until a quarter crack opened up on a horse I'd just done. He said the rasp breaks the edge tension, and now I see why. Do you guys follow that rule or think it's overkill?

Learned that lesson the hard way too.

Nah, I skip it half the time and it's fine. Sometimes you just gotta trust the wood. Sorry that happened to you though, @lindaburns.

My buddy's farrier skipped the rasp on a simple job last year, said it was a waste of time. Two weeks later the horse popped a nasty crack right at the toe. Vet bills were insane. Now he never cuts that corner, says the five minutes with the rasp saves a world of hurt later. Your mentor is totally right about the edge tension thing.
