Had to choose between a hand forge and a gas forge for my rig
Last spring I was setting up my mobile shop and couldn't decide on a forge. I went with a gas forge because I thought it would be faster for shoe adjustments on the road. Four months in I realize I'm missing the control I had with coal, especially when I need to work a tricky draft horse's foot in under 20 minutes. Has anyone else made the switch and regretted it or found a good compromise?

Jake's got the right idea with that cart setup. A gas forge is fine for quick heats but it doesn't hold a candle to coal when you need to finesse a tricky shoe. Compromise is the way to go.

My buddy Jake actually went through this same thing last year. He bought a gas forge for his trailer setup and after about six months he was cursing it out every time he had to do a draft horse. He ended up keeping the gas forge for quick heat ups but built a tiny coal forge on a cart that he wheels out when he needs that REAL precise heat control.

My friend Mark swore by coal after his gas forge couldn't handle a proper weld on a trailer hitch.
