An old timer at the county fair told me my clinch was too high

He said I was leaving the nail tip a quarter inch above the wall, which was why I kept getting quarter cracks. I dropped it down and haven't had a pull-through since. Anybody else get a tip like that from a seasoned hand?

Oh man, I learned that one the hard way too. I had a farrier tell me my clinches looked like I was trying to hang a picture frame on the hoof wall. I was proud of how tight they were but then I kept having shoes pull off on the back feet and it drove me nuts. Turns out I was clinching too high and the nail tip was acting like a little pry bar every time the horse moved. Dropping it down fixed the problem but I still cringe thinking about how many shoes I lost before someone older and wiser set me straight. Guess we all have to learn the hard way sometimes.

Ain't the clinch itself more about shape than height?
