A client's old gelding taught me about patience last fall

I was working on a tough case of laminitis out near Bend, and the owner just kept saying 'he's telling us how fast to go' while watching the horse's ears. That stuck with me more than any book on hoof angles. How do you all read a horse's mood when they're in pain?

Always watched for the obvious signs. That owner's comment about the ears makes you realize how much we miss.

Right, @jamie_taylor, because we're all dog whisperers until someone points out the floppy ear thing. Then it's like, oh, the tail wags, the weird head tilt, the dramatic sigh when you eat pizza without sharing. We miss a whole silent movie playing out right in front of us.
