My grandma insisted on using a cast iron skillet for cornbread and I thought she was just being old-fashioned.

I finally tried her 40-year-old Lodge skillet last week and the crust was perfect, so has anyone else had a family cooking tip that seemed weird but actually worked?

Oh man, my mom always puts a pinch of sugar in spaghetti sauce. I thought it was nuts but it totally cuts the acid.

My dad swears by a dash of cinnamon in his chili.

That's a total game changer for chili. A tiny bit of cinnamon adds this warm, deep flavor you can't quite place. It works with the cumin and chili powder really well. My secret is a little unsweetened cocoa powder, which does the same kind of thing.
