TIL my $20 thermometer was off by 15 degrees this whole time
Was making a roast chicken last Sunday and kept pulling it early cause it said 165F. Took a bite and it was raw inside. Grabbed my buddy's probe from work the next day and tested both in ice water. Mine read 47F. Threw it out and ordered a ThermoPro for $30. Anyone else had a cheap kitchen tool screw up their cooking for months without knowing?

I keep a cheap instant read in the drawer for backup, but my main one is a ThermoWorks Thermapen that I got after burning a brisket for a party. Testing both in ice water once a month has saved me from serving more raw chicken. A $30 digital probe is a solid upgrade, but checking it against a known cold source every few weeks will keep you from repeating this mistake.
