My uncle told me to always keep a spare key in my wallet. Turned out that was terrible advice when I lost my wallet in a cab in Portland last year.
For years I had a spare house key tucked in a hidden pocket of my wallet. My uncle swore by it, said he did it for decades. Then I left my wallet in a cab in Portland. Not only was I out my ID and cards, but whoever found it now had my address and a key. Had to get all my locks rekeyed. Cost me $120 and two hours of hassle. Anyone else got a tip from a relative that backfired on them?

Same exact thing happened to me with my dad's spare key trick, cost me $150 and a whole afternoon.
