My freezer defrosted overnight and I saved $150 of food with a cooler and salt

Our garage freezer door didn't seal right after I bumped it, and everything thawed by morning. I grabbed a big cooler, layered the still-cold food with ice packs and a handful of table salt to drop the temp faster. It kept everything safe until I could fix the seal and refreeze it. Anyone have a better trick for a sudden freezer failure?

Honestly, that salt trick seems unnecessary.

Totally agree, tried it once and it was a huge waste of time.

Read somewhere that salt water actually freezes at a lower temp, so it makes sense.
