Heard a guy at the hardware store talking about dryer vent fires and it shook me

I was grabbing some paint thinner near the register and this older dude was telling the cashier how his neighbor's whole laundry room went up last month. Apparently lint buildup in the vent caused it - they found about 4 inches of compacted lint at the exit flap. I went home and checked mine right away and pulled out enough lint to fill a grocery bag. Now I'm gonna clean it every 6 months instead of never. Has anyone else actually had a close call with this?

Started pulling lint out of my dryer vent last weekend and literally filled a whole trash bag.

Did you find anything melted or scorched in there?

Lint buildup was exactly what I found. Four inches sounds about right, mine had a solid plug near the outside flap. I used to think dryer vent cleaning was just something landlords made up to justify taking your deposit. @anna983 I hear you on the trash bag thing, I pulled a full grocery bag out of mine and felt sick. The worst part was realizing I'd been running that thing for years like it was fine. No scorch marks for me, but that much packed lint in one spot is basically a fire waiting to happen. Definitely changed how I see it now.
