Everyone says to use vinegar for cleaning, but I switched to citric acid powder.

I had to choose between buying another gallon of white vinegar or trying a $7 bag of food-grade citric acid from the bulk store. I went with the powder, and it's been way better for my hard water area. It doesn't leave that strong smell, and I use a teaspoon in a spray bottle instead of cups of vinegar. Has anyone else made a switch like that for basic home cleaning?

It's funny how we stick with old cleaning habits for years. Your switch shows how a small change can solve a few problems at once, like the smell and the hard water. We often overlook simple upgrades right in front of us.

My old apartment had the same hard water issue for five years. I tried a dozen different cleaners before realizing the problem was the shower head itself. Sometimes the fix isn't an upgrade, it's just replacing what's already broken.

Soaking it in vinegar or CLR never made a dent in the crusty buildup? I'm curious if you checked the aerator screen or just swapped the whole fixture. Sometimes a cheap new shower head with a rubber nozzle design does the trick where scrubbing just bounces off the mineral deposits.
