Forgot to test a new serum on a client and learned the hard way

I was working at a tiny spa in Portland a few years ago, and a new client came in for a basic facial. I grabbed a hyaluronic acid serum I had just gotten in stock, slapped it on without patch testing first. About 10 minutes in, her cheeks went bright red and she started itching like crazy. I had to stop everything, give her a cold compress, and calm her down while I figured out what was in that bottle. Has anyone else had a product reaction go sideways on them? How do you handle it without losing the client?

Used to skip patch testing all the time but a reaction like that totally changed how careful I am now with new products.

Stopped patch testing too until I got this awful burning rash on my neck from a moisturizer I was trying out. @matthew864 it's wild how fast your whole approach flips after a bad reaction, right? Now I just keep a small patch of skin on my inner arm as my tester zone for any new stuff. Takes like a few days to see if it flares, but saves me from ruining my whole face or neck. Better safe than sorry now, I guess.
