Rant: Two days tracing a fault in an old elevator panel

I've been stuck on this call for a week because of one tricky problem. The elevator in this vintage building keeps shutting down the safety system. I figured it was a bad switch at first, but that didn't pan out. Had to inspect every wire from the control box to the top of the cab. Each step took forever since the old wiring diagrams are smudged and off. My partner said it was a lesson in patience, and he was right. Finally spotted the issue yesterday, a rusted connector tucked behind a pipe. Now I'm sitting here waiting for the replacement to arrive, which means more downtime.

Read an article last week about the library downtown. They had the same problem with their old wiring. Said a magnifying glass helped them read those faded diagrams.

Ever try a bright flashlight on those wires?

Oh yeah, a good flashlight is key. I had to trace a wire in my attic last month and angled the light from the side, almost flat against the insulation. It made the printing cast a tiny shadow so I could read it. A headlamp works even better because it leaves both hands free.
