Warning: My optometrist found permanent eye issues from constant microscope use
I spent years hunched over microscopes fixing phones and never thought much of it. Last checkup, the doc said my retinas are stressed from all that focused light. He warned this is a big risk for repair folks who skip eye protection. I now wear blue light glasses and take vision breaks during jobs. Seriously, get your eyes checked if you do detailed work like this.

Did your optometrist get into whether those blue light glasses actually help with microscope light? I've seen a lot of debate about them, and I'm wondering if the kind of intense, close-up light from a scope is a different problem than regular screen glare. What did he say you should specifically look for in protective gear, like a certain rating or lens type?

Asked my guy the same thing last year. He told me to skip the blue light stuff for the scope and get simple tinted safety glasses with that Z87.1 rating. Went with a light amber tint, cuts the glare without making colors look too weird. Makes a huge difference during long sessions.

You're right that microscope light is a different problem. When you said "intense, close-up light," that's more about brightness and strain than the blue light from screens. My optometrist said for lab work, I should look for glasses that block glare and have side shields. A simple amber or grey tint can cut the brightness better than a blue light filter. For ratings, he mentioned looking for lenses that meet the ANSI Z87.1 safety standard.
