Vent: I just blew $85 on a 'universal' LCD screen tester that couldn't even read the basic voltage on a Samsung TV panel.

Has anyone found a tester that actually works on modern boards, or should I just stick with my multimeter and known-good parts?

Wait, eighty five bucks for a paperweight? That's insane. I'd be so mad. Those universal testers are such a gamble now with all the different panel types. Honestly, my multimeter and a small pile of known good boards have saved me way more times than any fancy gadget.

Ugh, tell me about it. I bought one of those testers a while back and it just collects dust now (total waste). Honestly, you're right on the money with the multimeter and known good boards. I keep a few cheap, working boards from old monitors just to swap parts and test, and that method has never failed me. Those universal gadgets can't keep up, and you end up trusting your own process more anyway.

My first year fixing monitors, I almost bought a $120 panel tester because the ads made it look foolproof. Hearing you both talk about your dust-collecting gadgets totally changed my mind on that whole idea. It makes way more sense to really learn how to trace a problem down with basic tools instead of hoping a magic box figures it out for you. I guess trusting the process with a multimeter and some spare boards is just the smarter long-term move.
