Found a cap burst open in a 20 year old receiver from a thrift store

Pulled a 2003 Sony receiver out of a Goodwill in Denver and a 6800uF cap had split right down the seam. Has anyone else seen age just destroy caps in gear from that era?

That era of Sony gear is notorious for using a bad batch of electrolyte formula in their caps around 2000-2005. Those 6800uF caps in particular run hot near the heatsinks, so the heat cycling over two decades likely dried them out and caused the split. Makes you wonder if the previous owner ever felt the top of that receiver running warm and just ignored it.

6800uF caps always blew up even in well-ventilated gear back then.

Actually it was more of a bad batch of electrolyte from a single supplier, not Sony's own formula. They sourced those caps from a company that had a known contamination issue around that time.
